Analysis Of The Poem Long Black Song By Richard Wright

W.E.B Du Bois makes points of having a double consciousness and being behind a veil. While Booker T. Washington points out that there is a dignity to be found in fruits from labor. In the reading of â€Å"Long Black Song,† by Richard Wright, he uses both of these points in his text to make the story come alive. Although, creatively both Du Bois and Washington’s points can be found hidden within the text; it is clear within this short story that Wright leaned to agree more with Du Bois points than he did with Washington’s points. W.E.B. Du Bois presents two ideas within his text, the idea that African-Americans live behind a veil and the idea that they constantly struggle with a double consciousness. (Washington 76-77) Washington is basically saying dignity in labor means that African-American men will earn respect if they provide white men with something useful, such as things you can get from working hard in a field and selling it to white men. This will show them you are valuable and therefore they will respect you. The right to be respected by white man has been earned and thus it will be given. â€Å"Long Black Song† starts out with hints towards Du Bois idea of the veil with the lines, â€Å"She saw green fields wrapped in the thickening gloam. It was as if they had left the earth, those fields, and were floating slowly skyward.† (Wright 65) The terms such as thickening and floating give the image of being behind or on something. The idea that the fields are being pulled into a veil. These lines give a bit of foreshadowing to the story when you read between them leading us to whether Wright will side with Du Bois or Washington at the end of the story.
